Rev. Hashmel Turner
A court hearing is coming in which the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals will be asked to restore to Christians the rights that political correctness in the United States today grants other religions, including the right to pray to their God.
The case involves Rev. Hashmel Turner and the city of Fredericksburg, Va., and is being handled by the constitutional experts at The Rutherford Institute.
Turner, a member of the city council in Fredericksburg, was part of a rotation of council members who would take turns bringing a prayer at the council meetings, and he ended his prayers "in Jesus name."
That offended a listener, who promptly brought several heavyweight activist groups into the picture with their threat of a lawsuit if the elected Christian council member wasn't censored, so the city adopted a policy requiring "nondenominational" prayers, effectively eliminating any reference to "Jesus."
John Whitehead, the founder and chief of The Rutherford Institute, told WND it's an issue of freedom of speech and freedom of religion, burdened with the politically correct atmosphere in the United States that appears to endorse or at least allow any sort of religious acknowledgement, such as the University of Michigan building footbaths for Muslims, but allows no similar acknowledgement of Christianity.
(Story continues below)

He said the Fredericksburg case is one of the first to be battled through the courts, and is being watched closely by city councils and state legislatures across the country.
WND has reported several times on various religious leaders, including one high-profile Hindu from Arizona, who have been asked to say prayers at various state legislatures and in the U.S. Senate. Meanwhile, leaders in the Senate specifically rejected permission for a Christian leader, former Navy Chaplain Gordon Klingenschmitt, permission to do the same.
The arguments in the Turner case will be March 19, and will focus on the circumstances that led the city to tell Turner, "You can't refer to your God," said Whitehead.
"The city passed this regulation telling people how to pray!" he said. The penalty for violating would be a citation for "disorderly conduct."
A lower court dismissed the First Amendment complaint, despite arguments that the restriction "violates Turner's constitutional rights to free speech, to freely exercise his religious beliefs and to equal protection of the law."
"The essential question in this case is whether the government can provide an opportunity to pray to a select group of individuals, all the while dictating the content of the prayers and excluding anyone who refuses to go along with their dictates," Whitehead said.
"The answer, as the Supreme Court has ruled in the past, is in the negative – the government simply cannot prescribe or proscribe the content of any 'official' prayer without violating the Establishment Clause, and it cannot discriminate against any person based on his or her religious viewpoint without violating that person's rights to free speech and free religious expression," he said.
Turner joined the council in 2002, but since the 1950s the council called on members on a rotating basis to open in prayer. He prayed both for himself individually that he might have wisdom and guidance in carrying out his duties and likewise for the council, officials said, ending "in Jesus name."
The result was a threat of a lawsuit from the ACLU, which later was joined by other similarly situated advocacy organizations.
The council buckled, adopting a policy of "nondenominational" prayers only. The district court opined that the councilman's prayers were "government speech," an argument Whitehead challenged.
"Government cannot itself pray, thus prayer cannot be government speech," the appeal noted. Moreover, the standing definition of "government speech" generally has applied when the government controls the content, not during an individual council member's prayer.
Whitehead, in an opinion column on the case, which already has been in the courts for two years, said the people of Fredericksburg "should be grateful for a representative who knows how to stand his ground and fight for the things that matter."
"There are some things in life that cannot be compromised, " he continued. "For Hashmel Turner, his faith, his integrity and his civil liberties are three things worth fighting for."
He noted Turner was the oldest of 10 children and served in the Army in Southeast Asia from 1969-1972, then returned to help each of his nine younger siblings get a start in life.
He and his wife Alice have been married more than three decades. He's served as an interim pastor and works as a motor vehicle operator and safety training instructor.
"In the state where Thomas Jefferson penned the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom to protect the likes of three Baptist preachers jailed for uttering unlicensed prayers, it may seem strange that ending a prayer with three small words could ignite a legal brushfire," Whitehead said. "Yet it has.
"Other members of the city council are able to pray in the manner they choose and describe God in their own words. Apart from three small words, the other council members' prayers are not much different from Turner's," he said.
Whitehead told WND the case is just a symptom of the total secularization of America intended by groups like the ACLU and one of the newer organizations to join in trying to censor Turner, People for the American Way.
He cited another case his firm has handled: A student in Las Vegas who wanted to "mention" Jesus during her valedictory speech at graduation. School officials told her no, and when she did, turned off her microphone during her speech.
"There's a political correctness, " he said. "Here's what I'm seeing nationwide. People don't want to offend anybody, so if one person is disturbed by the name 'Jesus" they want to eliminate it."
Yet at the same time the public is making accommodation for Muslim prayer rooms, footbaths and other special provisions for members of that faith.
"There seems to be very much of a tolerance for other religions, but not for Christianity, " he said.
WND also has reported a number of times on the battles fought by a former Navy chaplain, Gordon James Klingenschmitt, who was ejected from the service because he chose to pray "in Jesus name."
But not all cases are being lost. Klingenschmitt wrote for WND about the case when the city council in Tulsa, Okla., voted 7-2 to restore religious liberty by lifting a ban that had prohibited praying "in Jesus name" before council meetings.
He also wrote about victories in Indiana, where the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals overturned a decision that banned praying to Jesus on the floor of the state House, and in Ohio, where state officials reversed their temporary ban on prayers to Jesus.
In Klingenschmitt' s own case, he was convicted by the Navy of failing to follow a lawful order because his superior didn't want him praying "in Jesus name." But when Congress got word of his $3,000 fine for his prayer, members ordered the Navy to remove the limitation and allow chaplains to pray as their "conscience dictates."
WND also has reported on several cases in which Christians have been cited, or threatened with citations, for disorderly conduct for their expressions of their faith, including praying in a city park, and practicing praise and worship music in a church building.

The Inconceivable Works of God

The Inconceivable Works of God
or
( A story for the Birds)

One day I went to the garage to do some cleaning. As I begin to do my chores I saw movement out of the corner of my eye. Laying on the floor of the garage was a humming bird , he had little life. He had become entangled with a small amount of saw dust and lent which had disabled him to fly.
Ecclesiastes 9:12 (NIV) 12 Moreover, no man knows when his hour will come: As fish are caught in a cruel net, or birds are taken in a snare, so men are trapped by evil times that fall unexpectedly upon them.

I called to my wife and with her help we carefully begin to clean the sawdust and lent from the humming bird. His eyes were shut but we could tell he was alive by his faint breathing.
Psalms 111:7 (NIV) 7 The works of his hands are faithful and just; all his precepts are trustworthy.

My wife went into the house and made sugar water and brought it to the garage in a small bottle cap. As I held the bird in my hand my wife held the bottle cap with sugar water to his beak. He immediately begin to feed on the sugar water.
John 4:14 (NIV) 14 but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life."

We have a humming bird feeder on our deck and enjoy watching the birds feed, but this was a new experience we had a humming bird in hand,watching him feed. It was an amazing sight. You could see his small tongue reaching into the bottle cap and drinking in the life giving fluid. His eyes begin to blink and you could see life returning to this little body. He soon gained enough strength to stand in my hand.

My wife and I went to the deck hoping that he had gained enough strength to fly away. As we sat there for a few minutes waiting for something to happen I noticed that the claws of his feet were entangled in the rag that we laid him on when we first picked him up in the garage. His legs were so tiny that I was afraid to try to untangle them for fear of breaking them. I managed to free his legs, he sat there for a split second and then his wings begin to flutter and hum and suddenly he was off darting about (as only hymning birds can) flying as strong and beautifully as ever. It happened so quickly that my wife I were taken by surprise. As we looked at each other in satisfaction she said " It makes you feel good doesn't it" I agreed.

I thought about what had happened with the humming bird and how appropriate it relates to God and man. God so loved the world (you and me) that he sent his Son so we could be free from the entanglements of this world.

We were dying, caught in the web of our sins. Jesus found us in our entanglement and though his death on the cross sit us free.
If the little bird had not taken the nourishment when given to him he would have died, so also Jesus has provided living water for us to drink , but we must drink, we must accept his provision, we must accept his love or we die.

The feeling that my wife and I felt after watching the humming bird fly free can not be compared to how God feels after we have accepted his love and sacrifice that paid for our sins. God's ultimate gift, through his Son Jesus Christ has provided for us freedom from our sin and one day we too will take that momentous flight .
1 Corinthians 2:9 (NIV) 9 However, as it is written: "No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him"

Hard Times Can be Our Downfall

Going through chemotherpy can cause a person to fall away from God. We must not let our hard times keep us from the Heavenly Father whom heals all wounds. We must stay in constant prayer for the healing.

Always Stay with God

There are times that we do not know what is best for us. I have learned going through chemotherpy that I must rely on the heavenly Father to walk me through the hard times.

"Christ died for the ungodly." Romans 5:6

What had You done, O my sweet Savior, and ever-blessed
Redeemer--that You were thus betrayed by Judas, sold to
the Jews, apprehended as a malefactor, and led bound as
a lamb to the slaughter? What evil had You committed,
that You should be thus openly arraigned, falsely accused,
and unjustly condemned? What was Your offence? Whom
did You ever wrong? that You should be thus . . .
woefully scourged with whips,
crowned with thorns,
reviled with words,
buffeted with fists,
beaten with staves?

O Lord, what did You do to deserve to have Your blessed
face spit upon, and covered as it were with shame; to have
Your hands and feet nailed to the cross; to be lifted up on
the cursed tree; to be crucified among thieves, and made
to taste gall and vinegar; and in Your deadly extremity, to
endure such a sea of God's wrath, that made You cry out,
as if You had been forsaken by God Your Father; yes, to
have Your innocent heart pierced with a cruel spear, and
Your precious blood spilt before Your blessed mother's eyes?
Sweet Savior, how much were You tormented to endure all
this--seeing I am so much amazed even to think upon it!

What is the cause, then, O Lord, of this Your cruel
ignominy, passion, and death? I, O Lord--I am the
cause of these Your sorrows!

My sins wrought Your shame;
my iniquities are the occasion of Your injuries;
I have committed the fault--and You are punished for the offence;
I am guilty--and You are arraigned;
I committed the sin--and You suffered the death;
I have done the crime--and You hung on the cross!

Oh, the deepness of God's love!

Oh, the amazing profoundness of heavenly grace!

Oh, the immeasurable measure of divine mercy!

The wicked transgress--and the just is punished;
the guilty set free--and the innocent is arraigned;
the malefactor is acquitted--and the harmless condemned;
what the evil man deserves--the holy God suffers!

What shall I say? Man sins--and God dies!

O Son of God! who can sufficiently . . .
express Your love, or
commend Your pity, or
extol Your praise?

I was proud--and You are humble;
I was disobedient--and You became obedient;
I ate the forbidden fruit--and You hung on the cursed tree;
evil lust drew me to eat the pleasant apple--
and perfect love led You to drink of the bitter cup;
I tasted the sweetness of the fruit--
and You tasted the bitterness of the gall.

O my God, here I see . . .
Your goodness--and my vileness;
Your justice--and my injustice.

And now, O blessed Lord, You have endured all this for
my sake; what shall I render unto You for all Your benefits
bestowed upon me, a sinful soul? What shall I render to
You, for giving Yourself in Your infinite love, to so cruel
a death, to procure my redemption?

Revival According To The Beatitudes

I asked myself how could this apply to revival. So I started reading it from a revival perspective.

Matthew 5:3 (KJV)
3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

As I read this I thought, the kingdom is righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost, it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom, and seek first the kingdom. I thought to myself if we want the kingdom we have to see our spiritual poverty! We have to see our need for more! If we say we have been there and done that, we will never get more. Or, if we think we have arrived. We already got it we don't need to be desperate for more. Then we will never continue on to the more the Lord has for us. Eventually we will see even what we have to begin to wane and possibly even die out. I thought to myself many have experienced the kingdom of heaven right here on earth. They saw there poverty. They saw their need. They had a desperation that wasn't satisfied with anything less than His kingdom coming!!! I mean earth shaking REVIVAL!!! But since they experienced the kingdom they have now started to define themselves. Many say we are a River Church or whatever... Sounds harmless. But I want to be careful that by defining myself I don't lock myself into just being a River Church and not reaching my full potential in God!!! Once you arrive and start to define yourself, you could be in danger of boxing yourself into what you are. Wow!

Matthew 5:4 (KJV)
4 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

Then as I read this I thought if we want the Comforter to come and comfort us we need to be broken. God is close to those that are broken. I also thought of travail. It is when Zion travails that souls are birthed into the kingdom. We must become broken and travail before God...

Matthew5:5 (KJV)
5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

Psalms 2:8 says that if we ask He will give us the nations! But we first have to be meek or humble to inherit the earth. God has told us what he requires of us; to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God. It is interesting to look at those that God used in past revivals. God uses the foolish things of this earth to confound the wise! Many of these past leaders were nameless, faceless, unknowns! To keep revival you must stay nameless and faceless!!! Stay hid behind the Glory!!! Stay meek and humble!!!

Matthew 5:6 (KJV)
6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

We have to have a hunger and thirst for the things of God. With out hunger or a desire for more we will never see more! When a people become satisfied they are doomed to stagnation! Their fruit will wither! What a tragedy!!!

Matthew 5:7 (KJV)
7 Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.

We have to sow mercy if we want mercy. The world needs to know that there is mercy in God. As we reach out to those that are outcasts or those that are rejected by society God will reach back to us. We reap what we sow! We need the mercy of God for a MIGHTY OUTPOURING OF THE HOLY GHOST!!! Not everyone that may come to our Churches are going to be dressed the way we may think they should or may not smell very well. But God still loves them and wants to touch their live too!

Matthew 5:8 (KJV)
8 Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.

We have to have pure lives for God to send a MIGHTY OUTPOURING OF THE HOLY GHOST. Acts 5:32 says that God gives His Spirit to those that obey Him! Are you willing to obey Him no matter what! God is looking for those that are sold out! Those that are willing to be radical for Him! One of the most damaging things to happen to a Revival is for the ones God is using to have inconsistences in there purity!!! God give us more grace!!!!

Matthew 5:9 (KJV)
9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.

We have to be peacemakers. When revival comes if we are not peacemakers we will have a hard time with those that the enemy places against what God is doing! We are to follow after peace. Jesus is the Prince of Peace. Through the Holy Ghost we have the Prince of Peace living on the in side of us. Christ in you the Hope of Glory. Those that are led by the Spirit of God are the sons of God and the fruit of the Spirit is Peace... Choose now to live in peace and make yourself ready! God is on the move!!!

Matthew 5:10-12 (KJV)
10 Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11 Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.
12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

I was told by someone one time to never forget, that those that we consider to be giants of the faith today, were hated and despised by many when they were living! It wasn't until years after their death that they became considered great reformers and mighty men of God. Are you willing to go through persecution? Those that suffer with Christ will reign with Christ!!!
Just some thoughts...
Blessings, catcmo2006

Continuing in the Word of His Grace

Continuing in the Word of His Grace
And when they had preached the gospel to that city and made many disciples, they returned to Lystra, Iconium, and Antioch, strengthening the souls of the disciples, exhorting them to continue in the faith . . . And now, brethren, I commend you to God and to the word of His grace. (Act_14:21-22; Act_20:32)
The Lord desires for us to continue in a growing relationship with Him, continuing to draw more and more upon His grace: "continue with the Lord . . . continue in the grace of God" (Act_11:23; Act_13:43). One vital aspect of this process is to be continuing in the word of His grace.
As Paul and his missionary team passed through Lystra, Iconium, and Antioch (in Pisidia), they urged the disciples there to "continue in the faith." "The faith" is often used in the scriptures to refer to the revealed truth of God (in which we are to place our faith). Jude wrote in this manner. "I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints" (Jud_1:3). Thus, the word of God is "the faith." Consequently,
the call to "continue in the faith" was an exhortation to live by abiding in the word of God.
Later, when Paul was visiting the church leaders from Ephesus for the last time, he entrusted them unto the care of the Lord and His word. In doing this, he referred to the scriptures as "the word of His grace." Grace characterizes the word of God. Grace permeates the word of God. Grace flows from the word of God. It is in the scriptures that we learn of God's grace. There we learn of what it is (the Lord's undeserved riches, poured out freely for our justification, sanctification, and glorification) . There we learn of our great need for grace (a desperate, comprehensive, continual need). Also, in the word we learn of how we can access it (through humble dependence upon the Lord).
If we are going to continue in grace as the Lord desires, we must continue in the word of His grace. We will want to read it prayerfully day by day. We will want to study it regularly for increased understanding. We will want to meditate upon it often for growing implications and applications. Above all, we will want to be in the word consistently that we might get to know the Christ of the word. In knowing Him more, His mighty grace will properly impact our lives.

Life Filled With Choices with a Prayer

1 Sam 12:1-25 (GW)Samuel's Spotless Leadership
1 Then Samuel said to all Israel, “I have listened to everything you have said to me and appointed a king over you. 2 And now, here is the king who will lead you. I am old and gray, but my sons are with you. I have led you from my youth until this day. 3 Here I am. Testify against me in front of the Lord and in front of his anointed king. Did I take anyone's ox? Did I take anyone's donkey? Did I cheat or oppress anyone? Did I take a bribe from anyone to look the other way? {If so,} I will give it all back.” 4 They answered, “You didn't cheat us, oppress us, or take anything from anyone.” 5 Samuel told them, “The Lord is a witness to what you've said, and his anointed king is a witness today that you've found nothing in my hands.” “He is a witness,” they answered. 6 Samuel told the people, “The Lord appointed Moses and Aaron and brought your ancestors out of Egypt. 7 Now, stand up while I put you on trial in front of the Lord and cite all the righteous things the Lord did for you and your ancestors. 8 When your ancestors went with Jacob to Egypt {and were oppressed}, they cried out to the Lord, who sent Moses and Aaron to bring them out of Egypt. The Lord settled them in this place. 9 But they forgot the Lord their God. So he handed them over to Sisera, who was the commander of the army of Hazor, to the Philistines, and to the king of Moab. All of them fought against your ancestors. 10 Then they cried out to the Lord and said, ‘We have sinned. We have abandoned the Lord and served other gods and goddesses—the Baals and the Astartes. But rescue us from our enemies now, and we will serve you.' 11 “Then the Lord sent Jerubbaal, Bedan, Jephthah, and Samuel and rescued you from your enemies on every side so that you could live securely. 12 But when you saw King Nahash of Ammon coming to attack you, you told me, ‘No, a king should rule over us,' though the Lord your God was your king.
The New Kingship
13 “Now, here is the king you have chosen, the one you asked for. See, the Lord has put a king over you. 14 If you fear the Lord, serve him, obey him, and don't rebel against what he says, then you and your king will follow the Lord your God. 15 But if you don't obey the Lord, if you rebel against what he says, then the Lord will be against you as he was against your ancestors. 16 Now then, stand still and watch this great thing the Lord is going to do right before your eyes. 17 Isn't the wheat being harvested today? I will call on the Lord, and he'll send thunder and rain. Then you will realize what a wicked thing you did in the Lord's presence when you asked for a king.” 18 Then Samuel called on the Lord. That day the Lord sent thunder and rain so that all the people feared the Lord and Samuel very much. 19 All the people pleaded with Samuel, “Pray to the Lord your God for us so that we will not die. We have added {another} evil thing to all our other sins by asking for a king.” 20 “Don't be afraid,” Samuel told the people. “You did do all these evil things. But don't turn away from the Lord. Instead, serve the Lord wholeheartedly. 21 Don't turn away to follow other gods. They can't help or rescue you, because they don't exist. 22 For the sake of his great name, the Lord will not abandon his people, because the Lord wants to make you his people. 23 It would be unthinkable for me to sin against the Lord by failing to pray for you. I will go on teaching you the way that is good and right. 24 Fear the Lord, and serve him sincerely. Consider the great things he did for you. 25 But if you go on doing what is evil, you and your king will be wiped out.” The Bottomline is : In The Name Of Progress <> Samuel has been in service to Isreal for many years. He stoops slightly after years of carrying the weight of goverment on his own shoulders. He's seen many things. He's experienced God in many ways. Now it's time for him to step down. A handsome strong, king replaces an old gray prophet . With this, a divine administration. The people rejoice,but Samuel's heart is broken. Like a magnificent oak cut down,this ancient strength is dismissed in the name of progress. The prophet, who spoke for God on many occasions, now reveals his own heart. " What have I done against you? What have I done to deserve this?" he ask. The people confirm his innocence, yet their desires do not waver. At this time and moment, a king who will require everything (1Sam.8:11) replace a prophet for nothing. Stand Still and See <> ( 1 Sam 12:16) "What does it take to get Your attention? Samuel seems to be asking. Enough with the loving reprimands, Isreal needs a reminder that it has rejected God's as their king (1Sam.12:12) . " Stand still and see this great thing the Lord is about to do before Your eye's!" Samuel say's, and then asked for thunder and rain. The Lord provides both so forcefully that the people think that they're about to die ( 1Sam.12:19). Many call a stom like that of a "freak of nature," revealing how easily we cast off God's mastery as "random chance." Samuel wants the people to be aware. By asking them to "stand still and see," he urges them to actively look for a display of God's power. Power Behind the Iron<> ( 1Sam.13:19) " Not a black smith could be found in the whole land of Isreal." This isn't for lack of know - how, since the first smith, Tubal - Cain, is mentioned way back in Genesis. He worked with bronze and iron ( Gen. 4:22). It isn't for lack of resources either,since Isreal is a land where rocks are iron" (Deut. 8:9). The lack of the blacksmiths is due to the Phillistines' is due to the Philistines control. They close the blacksmith shops and exile the smiths into their own country. They prohibit, by sever penalities, any Isrealite from practicing the trade. Not only does this keep the Isrealites from making weapons (1Sam.13:22) , but it also allows the Philistines to grow rich off payment for the blacksmith work that needs to be done ( 1Sam..13:20, 21). Yet this did not alway's assure victory ( 1Sam. 14:13,14). The philestines forgot one thing - which has a God on their side. Prayer<> Lord Jesus, I commit my life to You totally, spirit, soul, and body. I ask that You bend, break, and mold me into the person that You want me to be. Lord, teach me to trust in You and to live and walk by faith in You and Your Word. I commit to You, Lord, to take accountability and responsibility in my walk with You and Your Word. No more will the enemy’s devices and the deceptions of the old man easily sway me. I purpose to firmly fix my eyes and heart on You, Lord, totally today. I press, push and apprehend all that you have for me today, keeping in the back of my remembrance that the enemy loves a lazy or slothful mind. satan, I come against you and all hosts of hell and I reject everything that you would have for me today. satan, I refuse all snares, pits, and traps that you have set to draw me away from my Lord Jesus Christ. I rebuke you, satan, and all your hosts in the name of Jesus from every assignment you have assigned against me or my family, my property, my health and my finances. Father I ask and believe for Your best in my life today and that Your will and purposes be done in and through me. I also ask that You keep me in Your perfect will and make me a yielded vessel fit for Your work today. I place myself under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, "He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust", for I chose to dwell in the secret place of the Most High. In Jesus Name, amen.
